This version of “Learning To Fly” has been choking me up for the past couple weeks. I’m not sure what it is, but maybe it’s the way the longing comes to the forefront. Or maybe it’s how Tom ad libs over the audience’s singing at the end, singing about flying high over our troubles. The subtle playing of the band is just perfect, the mantra-like repetition and hush of the background vocals. Man, it kills me.

As a sidenote, I had a good friend in high school who was disappointed with me for liking this song because it was “obviously about drugs.”

Live Wind Map Shows Flow Patterns

I get kind of giddy whenever I see a tweet from Martin Wattenberg and Fernanda Viegas. They rarely tweet, but when they do it’s usually because they’ve released a new project and they always announce it simultaneously. Their latest piece shows live wind patterns, based on data from the National Digital Forecast Database. It’s beautiful to look at.
